Barton 1792
Located in historic Bardstown, Barton 1792 dates back to 1879.
This distillery paints their rickhouses black - according to them it enhances the temperatures inside the building and therefore creates richer flavors within the bourbon barrels.
Like most distilleries, they purchase locally grown corn. We happened to be there when a driver brought in a load of corn. He backed up the truck to the warehouse and unloaded the corn into a hopper.
That contraption there collects the "white dog" off the still. White dog is the pure un-aged whisky that will light your ass on fire. Most people call it moonshine. I thought I was going to vomit.
Our tour witnessed a local as he did a private tasting and full barrel purchase. Several barrels are sampled from and the purchaser then gets to choose which one he wishes to buy. Each barrel goes for 8-10,000 dollars and he will get his own private label put on the bottle. Each barrel will yield 150-200 bottles and the purchases gets to set his own price for each.
We were allowed to sample all of the varieties.
