Laura Plantation is a Louisiana Creole Plantation which is much different from an Anglo Plantation. The Anglo Plantations along the River Road in Louisiana are English speaking homes, while the Creole Plantations had French speaking residents. It is said that travelers along the River Road could look at the house and know if they were welcomed or not. Louisiana and New Orleans had many different ethnicities and languages spoken
The French Creole style homes are very colorful with only three rooms on the upper floor. They are also run by women
This plantation is kept in the Creole style with the bottom floor still open and used for storage
An 1850 Map of the area showing over 300 plantations and farms. The plantations on the east side of the river were mostly cotton, while the west side plantations were sugar cane.
The building was constructed without nails. Each beam is numbered and uses a dowel system to hold the beams in place
Inside rooms are very bright and colorful. Much like the French Caribbean
Many of the original buildings still stand
20+ varieties of bananas are grown here
