President James Garfield's Home

President James Garfield
Mentor, Ohio

James Garfield served as the 20th President of the United States, but only for six months.  He was shot on July 2nd, 1881 by James Guiteau, a disgruntled officer seeker.  President Garfield suffered until Sept 19th, 1881 when he succumbed to his wounds.  A wonderful book on the subject:  Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of A President.

His wife, Lucretia, added the first Presidential Library, to the house in 1885.  Also on display are several of her dresses.

Queen Victoria sent this wreath to the family upon his death. It laid on his coffin and is now preserved in the house.
