Old Fort Jackson - Savannah, Georgia

Old Fort Jackson

President Thomas Jefferson authorized the building of Old Fort Jackson in 1808 and it was completed in 1812, just in time for the coming war.  The Fort itself, was built on top of some earthenworks and fortifications created and used during the American Revolution and remained in use through the Civil War.  From 1880-1905 it was briefly renamed Fort Oglethorpe but had little use.  It now belongs to the Coastal Heritage Society and is not part of the National Park Service.
