Historic Churches of Charleston #4

St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church

The oldest Roman Catholic in South Carolina and the Mother Church of the Diocesses of South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. It was established in 1789 but a fire destroyed the original building, this one was built in 1839

My pictures do not adequately do the interior justice! The colors are spectacular

Again, these pictures to not correctly reflect the vibrant colors or the grand scale of the art work

A painted ceiling but the flash did not reflect its true beauty.

A headstone written in Latin and surrounded by dogwood flowers
Interesting headstone. Note that the brother, who is memorializing an paying for the the headstone, his name is bigger than the deceased brother.
A French headstone

St. Matthew's Lutheran Church

The second Lutheran Church that organized in 1840 primarily for the German speaking settlers. This has a 297 foot steeple! and was built in 1872.
